Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulls out of US Open

NOT FIT: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (PA)

FRANCE’S BEST hope of winning a Grand Slam, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, has been ruled out of competing at the US Open due to injury.

The 28-year-old big-hitter has not been able to regain full fitness after suffering a knee problem that forced him to retire from his second-round match at Wimbledon in June.

Ranked number eight in the world, he told his official website: “It would be stupid to go there knowing full well that I have no chance because I'm not prepared enough.

“I have to take care of me and make sure I can play 100 per cent.”

He added: “The doctors told me that it would be at least two months for my tendon to partially heal and five months to be completely healed.”

The US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York starts on August 26 – the current champion is Andy Murray.

The Scot has demonstrated remarkable form this year and became the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years.
