TARGET: Jack Rodwell (left) in action against Stoke City recently
EVERTON'S 20 year-old England midfielder Jack Rodwell is reportedly a transfer target for Chelsea in January. Everton, who have been struggling for money, are likely to demand a fee of around £20million for their prized asset, similar to the sum received from Manchester United for Wayne Rooney in 2004, but with Chelsea having forked out some £50 million for misfiring Fernando Torres nearly a year ago, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is likely to start the bidding much lower.
With an ageing squad that has begun to show cracks this season, Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is eager to rejuvenate his side, as shown by summer signings such as Mata, Lukaku and Romeu, and reports suggest that the Chelsea boss is of the opinion that box-to-box midfielder Rodwell would make a perfect midfield general for his new-look side.
Rodwell has impressed since bursting into Everton’s first team two years ago, and after gaining his first senior England caps against Spain and Sweden last month, Fabio Capello predicted a bright future in the national side for the young Merseysider.
He has already become a key member of the Everton side, but having seen Sunderland receive £20million for Jordan Henderson over the summer, the Merseyside outfit could be willing to cash in if a big club come knocking.
