'Holy and Horny’

NEW PLAY: Writer and performer Tonya Joy Bolton in new play, Holy and Horny

A GROUNDBREAKING play which uses comedy to tackle taboo issues such as sexual abuse, sexual health and religion is not only breaking box office records but helping to change women’s lives.

Holy and Horny is a one-woman show written and produced by writer and performer Tonya Joy Bolton and the response to her current run of the play has been overwhelming.

“I’ve had emails and letters from women who say the show was a ‘light bulb moment’ for them over something they had perhaps been in denial about,” explains Birmingham-born Bolton who is director of ICU Transformational Arts, an acronym for Inspire your mind, Create your vision and Unlock your potential.

“A woman who saw the play last year wrote to say the rape scene had made her face up to what had happened to her. She was able to tell her family about it and went to have counselling. She was able to move on from it and lead a full life. She told me he play changed her life.

“Obviously, the show deals with very serious topics like sexual assault and domestic violence but it is not all doom and gloom and it’s not disrespectful either. People are taken on a journey where they can be laughing one minute but feeling uncomfortable the next.

“There has been great interest from London and I hope to take it on a national tour next year.”

Last year the play broke box office records at The Public arts centre in West Bromwich and it’s had another successful run this year.

Bolton will also perform the play at a Breaking the Silence Empowerment Day for women on Thursday October 25 at Wolverhampton’s Arena Theatre.

Drawing on themes from the play and a wide range of art forms such as creative writing and visual art, the day will include a live performance of the 90-minute show where Bolton plays 20 characters herself.

Places are limited. To attend contact the Arena Theatre on 01902 321321 or email: charlottegregory1@hotmail.com or visit: www.tonyajoybolton.com for further details.
