IN COURT: Michael Jace
A HOLLYWOOD actor who allegedly shot dead his wife in front of their children appeared in court for the first time yesterday (May 23).
Michael Jace, a former star on FX cop drama The Shield, is accused of killing his wife April, a financial aid counsellor at Biola University, at the couple's Los Angeles home - in front of their young children - in May 2014.
The 53-year-old then called a police dispatcher to confess he had shot his wife, authorities say. A recording of the call has not been released.
Police found April, 40, who had three sons, including the two with Jace, dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso.
The couple's two sons, who were both under 10, reportedly witnessed the shooting and were taken in a distraught state to the police station and were put in care.
The couple had been fighting over money and had been through a bankruptcy, court papers seen by the LA Times state.
Her family called her death a senseless act of domestic violence.
However, it court papers from his divorce to first wife Jennifer Bitterman revealed claims that he had an 'explosive temper' and that he had hit her on 'multiple' occasions.
Jace, who has been held in jail since his arrest two years ago, has pleaded not guilty to murder. His attorneys have said his state of mind on the day of the killing will be a key element of his defence.
The career actor has had roles in high profile films like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Forest Gump and State of Play.
