Gunmen and suicide bomber attack Somali UN compound

ATTACKERS: al-Shabab militants

ARMED MEN and a suicide bomber have attacked a UN compound in Somalia’s capital, according to the country’s police.

Police in Mogadishu told Reuters: “A suicide bomber blew himself up at the gate of the UNDP and then several armed fighters went in and opened fire”.

Located next to city’s heavily guarded airport, the UN Development Programme office is in the southern part of the capital.

Early reports indicate Islamist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The AFP news agency quoted a representative of the group saying: “Our commandos have attacked the UN compound... we set off an explosion and have entered the compound, where we are fighting with the infidel forces”.

International and government facilities in the city are common targets for militant groups, like al-Shabab, which has ties to al-Qaeda.
