GB name weight lifting squad for World Championships

HEAVY WEIGHT: Zoe Smith in action

BRITISH WEIGHT Lifting has named their squad for the IWF World Championships and European Junior & under 23 Championships, including Commonwealth Games gold medallist Zoe Smith.

Starting out as a gymnast, Smith first participated in weight lifting aged 12 after being asked to make up the numbers for the Greenwich team at the London Youth Games.

Smith finished fourth in the 58kg at the European Championships in Turkey in April and is a world youth silver medallist from 2011. She broke six British records at the final Olympic trials in May 2012.

A total of nine athletes have been chosen across the two competitions, with three prodigious young female lifters scheduled to compete at both. Rebekah Tiler, Mercy Brown and Sarah Davies will travel to Klaipeda in Lithuania to compete at the European Junior & under 23 Championships in October before joining five other elite British lifters at the World Championships in the Houston this November.
