Fulham's shining star circled by the big boys

WANTED MAN: Ryan Sessegnon

IT IS hard to see how Fulham can keep hold of the talented teenager Ryan Sessegnon as interest grows in the player. The midfielder shone once again despite his team losing 1-0 to Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon (January 6).

Whites manager Slavisa Jokanovic is very aware of the Premier League sharks circling their brightest prospect and with transfer assurances not forthcoming from owner Shahid Khan, he must wonder if the 17-year-old will be at Craven Cottage on February 1.

Although the home side were unable to get on the scoresheet against their top flight opponents, nearly all of their good work came via Sessegnon.

He linked up well with Denis Odi down the left and with seven league goals and four assists he is their top scorer and has been involved in 28% of their strikes.

While he was denied by Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and the post, his talent is clear for all to see. Quick, confident and always forward-thinking; he's one of the undoubted stars of the second tier with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United among those said to be watching his every move.

His importance to the team, club and more importantly, the fans is undeniable when you hear the sound the crowd elicits on every occasion that he touches the ball. It's makes sense to wonder if the fans obsession with him negatively affects his teammates in a stadium where most of the noise comes from the away supporters.

No one begrudges them cheering the starlet but the Championship’s tenth placed team may perform better with the team being backed as much as the individual. Maybe their exuberant vocal support for the player is because they know they won't be cheering him in a Fulham kit for very long.

If so, they may be advised to enjoy the little wizard while he's one of their own because the day when he isn't seems like it will be sooner than they think.
