Former deputy mayor’s sons plead guilty to assault

COURT: Councillor Judith Best's offspring to be sentenced next month

A FORMER deputy mayor’s two sons pleaded guilty to attacking a man who was left with broken ribs.

Councillor Judith Best appeared shocked at the Inner London Crown Court earlier this month, after her sons Scott Richards, 31, and Rion Peters, 20, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

The pair initially denied attacking 41-year-old Neil Potter on July 29, 2011, who was later hospitalised and needed 27 stitches. But they changed their pleas to guilty in a court hearing on January 10.

Richards and Peters will now be sentenced on February 1.

Best, a former Liberal Democrat councillor for Streatham Wells ward in south London, was also initially arrested over the incident but was later released without charge.

In November last year, Best resigned as a councillor saying she was “frustrated.”

The former councillor also came under fire in late December when the comment ‘live by the blade; die by the blade’ was posted from a Facebook account under her name on a tribute page set up for murder victim Seydou Diarrassouba.

Eighteen-year-old Diarrassouba was killed in Oxford Street in central London on Boxing Day.

Best said she did not post the message, has no knowledge of the message and that she had reported the incident to police.
