Five of the best travel destinations for movie buffs

TROOPING ON: Storm troopers at the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' premiere in 2015

ARE YOU a huge movie fan? Then why not experience the locations of your favourite flicks in person? Here’s our pick of the five top travel destinations for film fanatics...

1. Wonder Woman: Southern Italy

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: Castel del Monte features in the recent Wonder Woman film

The recent Wonder Woman film, released to huge acclaim, was filmed in parts of southern Italy. Key locations include Castel del Monte in the Apulia region and the city of Matera in the region of Basilicata, which each double as Themyscira – Wonder Woman’s home. Some scenes were also shot on the region’s fantastic beaches.

2. Spectre: Tangier, Morocco

SOUKING AROUND: Daniel Craig, right, as Bond trailing the markets of Morocco in Spectre

The excellent Bond instalment Spectre was, like many films in this insanely popular franchise, filmed all over the world – Rome, Mexico, Austria, and a host of other locations make an appearance. Yet probably its most iconic location is Morocco’s bustling Tangier, where some of this film’s best remembered scenes were filmed. Remember when Bond met Dr. Madeleine Swann? Well, those beautiful markets, villas, side streets and souks, where their relationship blooms, are all set in Tangier. Head over and immerse yourself in Bond.

3. Mad Max: Fury Road: Skeleton Coast, Namibia

MAD FOR IT: The African desert provided a fantastic backdrop for this classic remake

When Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller wanted somewhere phenomenal to shoot his new film, he didn’t turn to a well-worn filming destination. Instead, he selected Namibia’s stunning Skeleton Coast – surely one of the reasons that this movie received such rave reviews. All those apocalyptic wastelands and dusty deserts are filmed near Swakopmund – a former German settlement, complete with Bavarian timber-framed buildings. The result is an awe-inspiring feast for the eyes, as detailed in this film and TV map.

4. The Lord of the Rings: New Zealand

SETTING THE PACE: Characters from The Lord of the Rings have bough some positive attention to New Zealand

The film that really kick-started film tourism was probably Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, which revealed the unparalleled beauty of New Zealand to legions of fans. The entire trilogy was filmed in the country, but where to start? Matamata is the Shire, which features in the opening scenes of the first film as we’re introduced to Frodo. Around Wellington you will also find the locations for the Garden of Isengard, Rivendell, the River Anduin and Osgiliath Woods.

5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens: UK and Ireland

FEEL THE FORCE: Rural England and Ireland featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The most recent addition to the biggest franchise in the history of film is as much as celebration of the countryside of the British Isles as it is a sci-fi rollercoaster. The film’s intergalactic pursuits were actually filmed across the UK and Ireland, including the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England, the island of Skellig Michael off the coast of Ireland’s County Kerry, and the Lake District, which makes this sight-seeing tour a perfect road trip.
