Fire death toll confirmed

STILL GOING: Firefighters are still at the scene in west London

FOLLOWING THE tragic news that a fire has broken out in a west London block of flats in the early hours, firefighters confirmed that six people were killed in the inferno this morning and later revealed the number of those deceased rose to 12.

London's Mayor Sadiq Khan told BBC Radio:

"We can't have a situation where people's safety is put at risk because of bad advice being given or if it is the case, as has been alleged, of tower blocks not being properly serviced or maintained."

Matt Wrack, from the Fire Brigades Union has raised concerns about the fire prevention and safety procedures at Grenfell Tower, where the fire is still raging.

Local residents are pulling together to offer food and shelter to those affected by the incident. Those who have lost homes and possessions are able to take refuge at the Harrow Centre, in Freston Road, west London.
