Fans happy to report racism

REPORT: Recent survey revealed that 56 per cent of supporters were confident that any report of discrimination would be dealt with appropriately by the authorities

FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS have confidence in reporting discrimination, according to the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) National Fans’ Survey.

With Kick It Out, football’s equality and inclusion organisation, revealing a 16.7% increase in discrimination reports received last season, the FSF’s survey reveals that supporters of the professional game are confident in reporting, with over a fifth of fans witnessing or experiencing racism, homophobia or sexism within the stands.

The recent survey revealed that 56 per cent of supporters were confident that any report of discrimination would be dealt with appropriately by the authorities.

When it came to awareness around discrimination, 72 per cent of respondents said they knew what constituted discrimination, which demonstrates there is still work to be done around engaging and educating fans.

A large proportion of supporters also revealed that they had seen or experienced discrimination within a football stadium. A quarter of respondents (25 per cent) stated they had witnessed or suffered sexist language used, whilst homophobic (23 per cent) and racist (22 per cent) language had also been heard by supporters.

The FSF’s National Fans’ Survey attracted over 8,500 responses on a number of questions about the state of the game for supporters. To find out more visit the FSF’s website.
