Family appeal for trainee soldier missing for two weeks

MISSING: Steven Mubanga

THE FAMILY of a trainee solider who was reported missing two weeks ago (Jan 16) are appealing for him to get in contact and to let them know that he is safe.

Steven Mubanga, 20, from Croydon is a trainee soldier with the British Army and failed to return to his barracks after being on leave.

He was last seen in the early afternoon of Sunday, 11 January leaving his home in Kilmartin Avenue, Norbury.

He was due to board a train later that day to return to his barracks in Yorkshire, but police believe that he did not get on the train, and he has not been seen or heard from since.

Initial enquiries have failed to trace Steven - at this stage there is nothing to suggest his disappearance is linked to any criminal act.

Karen Guirhil, Steven's aunt said: "Steven's got such a good future ahead of him and this is just completely out of character for him. He's such a fun-loving, caring, committed and responsible person.

"Even when he's away and misses a call from me, he'll send me a text or message on Facebook to say sorry and that he'll call back soon. I'm just really worried that we've not heard any news from him at all and just want to know that he's safe.

"Steven, if you're reading this and you think that you're in any kind of trouble, then whatever it might be, I know that we can work it out together. I'm so proud of you and your cousin is missing you like crazy as well. We just want to know that you're ok so please, please get in touch."

Officers from Croydon's Missing Person Unit have been investigating the case, but to date have had no reports of where Steven may have gone and are becoming increasingly concerned over his welfare.

PC Kim Hyland, from Croydon's Missing Person Unit, who is leading the investigation said:

"Steven's disappearance is concerning. By all accounts, he was happy in his career and getting on really well in the Army. This is completely out of character, and there doesn't seem to be any reason why he would go missing like this.

"We've made extensive enquiries, and as far as we can tell, he has not gone abroad, so we are very keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard from Steven in the past couple of weeks.

"If Steven is reading this, then we'd just ask you to call us to let us know you're ok. You're certainly not in any trouble and your friends, family and colleagues just want to know that you're safe and well."

Steven is a black man, about 5ft 10ins tall, of medium build, with short black hair. He wears black, square-rimmed glasses and often wears a baseball cap. He was last seen wearing a grey, black and white hooded top, dark blue jeans, a black and green baseball cap and white Nike Air Jordan basketball trainers and was carrying a JD Sports bag and a back pack.

He has links to the Croydon, Norbury, Camberwell and Streatham areas.

Anyone with information on Steven's whereabouts should contact police on 101, or call the Missing People charity on 116 000.
