ARRESTED: Peter Foster has been arrested on suspicion of murder
A FORMER police officer has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend, it has been reported.
Peter Foster, 35, was taken into questioning after officers found the body of who they believe to be Detective Constable Heather Cooper, 33, dumped in a shallow grave at a National Trust beauty spot in Lurgashall, West Sussex, on yesterday morning (Oct 17).
"Police have cordoned off the area of woodland and forensic officers are on site carrying out inquiries. The woman's body has not yet been formally identified," a police spokesperson said in a statement.
"A 35-year-old man from Haslemere has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remains in custody," the statement continued.
The police are said to have paid a visit to the couple's home on Sunday evening (Oct 16) after a relative reported hearing screams at their £700,000 home in Haslemere, Surrey. Ms Cooper was found dead hours later.
Ms Cooper, who had given birth to the couple's second child one month ago, is thought to have been on maternity leave when she was murdered.
Foster, who left the Surrey police two years ago, is said to have started working as a heating engineer.
A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later today (Oct 18) at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
