Eubank: Proud to be British

NICE LEVEL: Eubank Jr

CHRIS EUBANK Jr says he does not see what the fuss is all about where Gennady Golovkin is concerned and would take a fight against the Kazakhstan boxer at the drop of a hat.

However, before that mega fight becomes a reality he wants to win the hearts of the British public.

Set to defend his British middleweight title against unbeaten Tom Doran on the undercard of the Anthony Joshua - Dominic Breazeale fight at the London O2 Arena on June 25, Eubank Jr told the Voice of Sport that mixing it with the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight champion Golovkin, 35, is where he’s headed.

Before that fight is made however the Brighton-born boxer is keen to stay busy and win the Lonsdale belt outright. “I’m a proud Brit, a patriot,” Eubank Jr enthused. He added: “It meant a great deal to me to come away with that belt, it’s something I have always dreamed of winning.

“Saying I am champion of Britain, I don’t know what it means to other fighters but to me it meant a great deal and that’s why we chose to go that route instead of fighting for a world title at that time.

“Now we have that we want to make our way towards winning that world title. Golovkin is the man but in the meantime while that fight is being made, we’ll defend the belt as many times as possible.”

Understanding the importance of beating all of the domestic prospects that are presented as having a chance of derailing Eubank Jr’s charge towards a world title, the 26-year-old said he planned to deal with whoever is put before him.

“I’m British and the public want to see domestic fights. When I am fighting guys from other countries that the public don’t know, its less exciting for them. When its two British guys fighting it makes the occasion more special, more interesting.

“So its very important to clean up your own division in your own country and then move onto world honours which is what I am doing.”

Golovkin is unbeaten in 35 contests with 32 of his wins coming by knockout. The California resident is regarded as one of the most feared fighters in the world but Eubank Jr doesn’t believe the hype.

He said: “He (Golovkin) is seen as the number one guy in my weight division, he’s seen as this unbeatable guy who everyone is scared of and I don’t see that.

“I watch his fights and I see slowness, I see a weak defence. I see great punching power but what happens when a guy takes the punch and says ok, now what, which is what I will do, if I get hit. Speed kills and for every one punch he throws I am going to be throwing three, four or five punches.

“So the only way he beats me is if he knocks me out and you are going to have to hit me with a sledge hammer to move me, so that’s where I get my confidence from against a man like that.”

Looking ahead to the immediate prospect of Doran, Eubank said: “I honestly haven’t see him fight, I don’t know anything about the guy.

“People have told me he is a brawler, apparently he got put down in his last fight and came back to win, so he has heart which is what he needs against a man like me.

“I’m going to study his fights and see where his weaknesses are and see what the best game plan will be. This is keeping me at a nice level until I can step up against world level fighters.”
