Doreen Lawrence to go before MPs about family smear claims

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: Doreen Lawrence wants to know the full truth behind claims that police tried to smear her family (PA)

DOREEN LAWRENCE will appear before the Home Affairs Select Committee following claims that police tried to smear her family.

The mother of Stephen Lawrence will meet MPs tomorrow (July 10) with her lawyer Imran Khan.

She called for a public inquiry after former Met officer Peter Francis said he posed as an anti-racism campaigner following her son's murder.

Two existing inquiries are underway to examine the claims.

Currently there is a police investigation into the activities of undercover officers, Operation Hearne and another into corruption in the original investigation into Stephen's murder, which is being led by Mark Ellison QC.

Ellison will also appear before the committee tomorrow.

Mrs Lawrence met with Met commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe and home secretary Theresa May last week.
