Diane Abbott reappointed as shadow home secretary

SHE'S BACK: Diane Abbott

DIANE ABBOTT has been reappointed as shadow home secretary after being removed from Labour’s frontbench during the election campaign.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn confirmed Abbott had been reinstated after she was briefly replaced by former shadow Home Office minister Lyn Brown in the final days of the election campaign.

The Hackney North and Stoke Newington MP, who was re-elected with an increased majority, revealed her type 2 diabetes was "out of control" during the campaign where she struggled in a series of interviews on police funding and security.

In an interview with The Guardian the veteran MP said: “During the election campaign, everything went crazy - and the diabetes was out of control, the blood sugar was out of control.”

63-year-old Abbott was diagnosed with the condition two years ago. She said: "It is a condition you can manage. I am doing that now and I feel ready to get back to work."
