DAWN BUTLER MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, hosted the DeaflympicsGB team at the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday to celebrate the team’s remarkable nine medals at the recent Deaflympics.

The Deaflympics took place in Samsun, Turkey in July this year, with 86 nations taking part.

Deaflympics GB’s nine-medal haul at the games ahead smashed their pre-games target.

Butler welcomed approximately 100 people, including the DeaflympicsGB team, representatives from UK Deaf Sport and other Members of Parliament for a celebratory reception which included short speeches and a video highlight package.

According to DeaflympicsGB, securing the funding to simply take part was one the biggest challenges they faced. They often relying on smaller grants from Sport England and personal fundraising to help them achieve their dreams.

Butler said:

“I was delighted to host the DeaflympicsGB team in Parliament to celebrate their fantastic achievements. The team did the country proud at the Deaflympics with their outstanding nine medals and this was a great opportunity to come together and celebrate their success.

"This reception was a valuable opportunity to raise awareness for deaf sport and our incredible deaf athletes. I will continue to support efforts to increase funding for UK Deaf Sport, to allow our teams to send more athletes and enter more events in the future, and I was pleased that this event was able to raise awareness for this important aim."

Following the event, Butler led the group for a tour of the House of Commons and guests were able to view a live sitting of the Commons.
