DAVID OYELOWO, Lily Collins and Dominic West have signed on to star in the BBC’s upcoming six-part adaptation of Les Misérables, according to Variety.

West will play Jean Valjean, a French criminal convicted of stealing a loaf of bread and sentenced to jail. He spends his life trying to do good works, yet is pursued by Inspector Javert (Oyelowo) for a parole violation.

Collins will star as Fantine, a woman who has sacrificed everything for her young daughter Cosette (Ellie Bamber). The cast also includes Adeel Akhtar and Olivia Colman as Monsieur and Madame Thénardier, Josh O’Connor as Marius, and Erin Kellyman as Éponine.

The series is a co-production between BBC Studios and Lookout Point for BBC and Masterpiece. Weinstein TV was a co-producer when the production was first announced and was set to distribute in the U.S. and China. However, since the sexual assault and harassment allegations against Harvey Weinstein, they were dropped as a producing partner.

“Les Misérables” has been adapted on film, television, and the stage since its original publication. Its most recent adaptation was the 2012 film which starred Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the flick.
