Chuka Umunna announces engagement to Alice Sullivan

ANNOUNCEMENT: Chuka Umunna and fiancé Alice Sullivan

STREATHAM MP Chuka Umunna has formally announced his engagement to solicitor girlfriend Alice Sullivan, five months after quitting the Labour leadership race over fears about the impact on his friends and family.

The engagement notice in The Times today (Oct 27) was taken out by Sullivan’s parents and reads: “The engagement is announced between Alice Elizabeth Jane, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Sullivan of Pauntley, Gloucestershire and Chuka Harrison, son of Patricia Umunna and the late Ben Umunna of Streatham, London.”

Sullivan, a 31-year-old politics graduate from Bristol University, is an employment lawyer.

The pair first made their public appearance as a couple just days before Umunna made his leadership bid only to quit the race three days later.

At the time, the former shadow cabinet member explained his decision to back out over concerns on how it would impact those close to him.

He said: "Until you're actually in the eye of the storm it's hard to know how you and people around you will think about it. I felt terrible about it.

“My family is incredibly important and precious. I've said that I could live without leading the Labour party or politics. For once I decided to put the rest of my life first.”

The parliamentary representative has since resigned from the shadow cabinet to remain in the backbenches and is said to be heading up an independent review with veteran MP Keith Vaz on into the support for Labour among ethnic minorities.

There is no confirmation as to when the pair will exchange vows.
