Chris Hughton digests ‘hammer blow’ thrashing

OUCH: Hughton can only watch on as he sees Norwich lose 4-1 to Aston Villa (PA)

NORWICH MANAGER Chris Hughton has faced several weeks of mounting speculation about his future in charge of the Canaries and the latest thrashing handed out to his side makes relegation look a likelier prospect.

The former Newcastle boss was shocked to see his men suffer a 4-1 demolition at the hands of Aston Villa over the weekend and claimed his team need to quickly turn things around if they are to survive.

Hughton said: “We've gone into the game in good form but it's a real hammer blow.

“We need to make sure we put ourselves in the best possible position to win next Saturday. A home win changes things again.

“We have to take it on the chin. As a manager I have to accept any criticism that comes my way after a defeat, it's normal.”

He added: “We weren't good enough, that's a fact, and we've been well beaten.”

The Canaries were ripped apart by two Christian Benteke goals, an effort from Leandro Bacuna, and an own-goal from defender Sebastien Bassong.

The last few weeks have been stop and start for Hughton after he saw his side beat Tottenham 1-0 at home the previous weekend.

There are only 10 games left for the Norwich coach to save their season and he knows only three points after 90 minutes for most of those matches will be enough to keep them up.

“We are in trouble,” Hughton said. “We want to be looking up and there's always a bad feeling straight after a result like we've had.

“But it's probably as competitive as I've seen the bottom half of the division and I imagine it'll continue that way.

“This is the league and you're going to have some bad days.”
