Chelsea legend's statue causes a stir

A STATUE has been erected in honour of Ghanian footballer Michael Essien - and it hasn't received the best reaction.

The statue, located in Essien's home country of Ghana, is intended to be a life-size replica of the former Chelsea football player.

The bust, designed by sculptor Emanuel Santos, portrays the footballer in Chelsea's iconic blue home strip and is kicking a ball. The choice to have the statue in a Chelsea shirt was criticised on social media.

One commentator on Twitter said: "Beautiful but would have preferred him in a ghana Jersey."

The image of the statue was taken by sports journalist Saddick Adams, who shared the image on Twitter on Monday, telling the footballer, 35, it was a "beautiful gift".

Essien made 256 appearances at Stamford Bridge between 2005 and 2014, helping the Blues to win nine trophies, including two Premier League titles.
