THE CHASE'S Shaun Wallace has been announced as Miss Caribbean UK's first official patron.

Known for being one of the Chasers on ITV’s quiz show The Chase where he has the nickname The Dark Destroyer, Wallace said: "I'm delighted to announce that I've become a Miss Caribbean UK Ppatron. I attended the Miss Caribbean UK pageant last year and had a wonderful time and I think that Miss Caribbean UK is a really positive way to promote the Caribbean in the UK.

Wallace, who is a barrister, added: "It is tremendous to see such a wonderful cause grow organically and I look forward to seeing British women of Caribbean descent continue to being promoted in such a positive light."

In 2004, Wallace was crowned the Mastermind champion – the first black person to win the popular quiz show.

“Winning Mastermind is still ranked as one of the greatest achievements of my life," he told The Voice in a previous interview.

“Like I said when I won, as far as black people were concerned, it was the equivalent of man walking on the moon.”

Wallace added: “So I’m very proud. It showed that we were more than just DJs and footballers. We’re a race that has intellect.”

As well as Mastermind, Wallace’s other television quiz appearances include Egg Heads, 15 to 1, Brainteaser, and The Weakest Link.

He was then head hunted for The Chase in 2009. The show is not for the feint-hearted, as competitors regularly leave the show empty-handed after battling it out against either Wallace or his two fellow chasers.

But the quizzer, who revises three hours a day, claims he doesn’t feel pressured to always get the questions right.

“There’s no pressure at all. That’s the beauty of it because I’m doing something I love.

“I don’t profess to know everything, and I can’t get everything correct.”
