Chadwick Boseman empowers students with inspiring speech

WISDOM: Chadwick Boseman returned to his alma mater, Howard University, at the weekend

BLACK PANTHER star Chadwick Boseman, returned to his alma mater, Howard University, last weekend in aid of the 150th commencement ceremony.

Boseman delivered the commencement to a crowd of more than 8,000 people, who looked on in awe and admiration of his words of wisdom.

Here are some of Boseman’s wise words from the speech.

‘Purpose is an essential element for you’

“You would rather find purpose than a job or career,” Chadwick told Howard University students. “Purpose crosses disciplines. Purpose is an essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Whatever you choose as a career path, remember the struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”

‘Use your education to improve the world’

In March, students staged a sit in over a dispute with the university and Boseman referred to their protest in his speech.

“Some of you here have struggles against the university itself...Many of you will leave Howard and enter systems and institutions that have a history of discrimination and marginalisation.

“The fact that you have struggled with this university which you love is a sign that you can use your education to improve the world you are entering.”

‘Challenge the system’

Boseman also recalled the experience of one of his firsts jobs in a soap opera. He told the avid listeners that he was let go from the role when he challenged his boss about the stereotypical nature of the black character assigned to him.

“When I dared to challenge the system, the system that would relegate us to victims and stereotypes with no clear historical backgrounds, no hopes or talent, a different path opened up for me. The path of my destiny.”
