Catch up with... James Anderson

BIG TALENT: James Anderson

BRITAIN DOES indeed have talent, and one such example of this is James Anderson, who has it in abundance. Making his debut on the ITV reality show Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) in 2009 when he was only 10-years-old, the singer received a standing ovation from judge Amanda Holden, after singing Beyonce’s Listen, but he did not reach the live semi finals.

Last year, however, the 13-year-old came third in the talent contest as part of boy band New Bounce, behind Ronan Parke and winner Jai McDowall. Since the end of the programme James has parted ways with New Bounce, and is now starring in the hit Michael Jackson musical Thriller Live, whilst getting ready to release music of his own.

Here, he speaks to Hazelann Williams about life after the talent contest.

How have you dealt with the publicity you received after appearing on Britain’s Got Talent?
It’s not been as crazy as I thought it would be. At first it was crazy when we were on tour, girls crying and stuff, chasing after the tour bus. That was funny. But now it’s kind of died down, I don’t think people recognise me as much now.

EASY AS ABC: as a young Michael Jackson in Thriller Live

Are you able to be normal kid at school?
In school everyone wants to know me. When I came into school (during BGT) everyone crowded around me. They would say, ‘New Bounce, New Bounce!’

Would you say your life is back to normal now?
When we came back from the Britain’s Got Talent tour, I was kind of bored, because so much happened. But I’m back into normal life now.

What hobbies do you have other than singing?
I like to play basketball. I’m really good at it, but I wouldn’t give up music for sports.

FINALS: New Bounce in Britain’s Got Talent

What is it like being part of the cast of Thriller Live?
It’s amazing. It’s crazy because Michael Jackson has been an inspiration to me. [Amongst the cast] it’s like I’m everyone’s little brother. We’re like a little family. It’s a privilege singing Michael Jackson’s song in the West End. I also met Jermaine Jackson.

Do you ever feel like you’re too young for your rising fame?
No, I like it. Especially when we [New Bounce] were on tour; I was with new friends. My mum comes with me; she’s my chaperone!

So what’s next for you?
This year I’m recording my mixtape and doing a few music videos and a few producers have sent me some songs to sing.

Many people have described you as the new Michael Jackson or the next Justin Bieber, is that what you aspire to?
I want to be the new James Anderson. I don’t want to be the next whoever, just me.
