Carnival costs on the rise

CELEBRATION: A carnival in Haiti

WHILE MANY of us have been enjoying the spectacle of the first large annual Caribbean carnivals, there has been a debate in Haiti about its cost.

In the wake of Hurricane Matthew in 2016, a weak infrastructure after the 2010 earthquake and national debt of more than US$2.2bn, there had been questions about Haiti’s 2017 carnival celebrations held in several cities.

Officials defended the US$3.6m bill (240m gourdes), pointing out that private sponsors also played their part in the annual festivities.
