Black journo arrested for 'looking like' a drug dealer

WRONGED: Vata Ngobeni

A BLACK journalist was arrested while drinking in a pub with white colleagues because he 'fit the profile' of a drug dealer, it has been claimed.

South African Rugby reporter, Vata Ngobeni, who works for Pretoria News newspaper, was taken into custody and strip searched by New Zealand police on Monday (Sept 26), despite explaining that he was in the country to cover the Rugby World Cup.

Ngobeni, who was the only black person present when he was arrested, was reportedly told by officers that his treatment was standard procedure for someone who "looked like a drug dealer".

Speaking after his release, he told a South African newspaper: "I have never been so embarrassed in my life."

"I have never experienced this kind of treatment in all my travels around the world, so to be singled out as a common criminal in front of so many people is something I will never forget," he added.

No charges are believed to have been made against Ngobeni.
