BIRMINGHAM HAS been named as the city to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games - the most expensive sports event to be held in Britain since the London Olympics.

The city's was the only bid submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) by the deadline of September 20, after it was chosen ahead of Liverpool as Britain's candidate.

Birmingham mayor Andy Street described the announcement as a "fantastic Christmas present for our region".

Prime Minister Theresa May also congratulated the city, tweeting: "Congratulations to #Birmingham, hosts of @thecgf in 2022. Well done Karen Bradley and @andy4wm who worked so hard to make it happen. A great city for what I’m sure will be an excellent tournament. #CommonwealthSport."

Birmingham native Sir Lenny Henry, also shared his thoughts following the announcement that the city will host the Commonwealth Games in 2022:

“Bringing the Commonwealth Games to Birmingham will help boost the profile of a city which should not just be recognised on a national scale, but deserves to be a name that resonates around the world.

“The city already boasts much of the infrastructure needed to put on an event of this size and scale, and to host the Games will be a real positive for all of us with a connection with this part of the world.”
