Basketball legend John Amaechi launches training initiative

MANCHESTER-BASED former NBA (National Basketball Association) star John Amaechi has launched a nationwide competition that offers 10 days of free coaching to young aspiring players.

The former NBA star launched the competition with a video called Are You Willing to Pay the F.E.E. (focus, effort, execution)? and included a personal message from him.

Amaechi, the first British player to start a game in the NBA, said the competition was his personal response to the withdrawal of all elite level funding for basketball earlier this year by UK Sport.

He said: “I see the frustrated talent around the UK. Coaches and players who want to chase greatness, but find themselves fighting against the odds. I want to help play a part by providing a bit of inspiration and working with players and coaches in their own towns and cities to spread best-practice. I hope this can become an annual event so that more and more people can win a chance to expand their basketball knowledge.”

Those who enter are in with the chance of winning a day with Amaechi – which will include a visit by the basketball legend, a coaches’ ‘chalk talk’, followed by an on-the-floor ‘coach the coaches’ session focused on the psychological, interpersonal and technical skills considered best practice for developing talent. The afternoon will focus on a session with the players.

To have a chance of winning, players and coaches need to record a video explaining why they, their team-mates and club deserve the opportunity to learn and improve and state exactly how they have and will show their willingnesss to pay the F.E.E.

The contest will be closed on August 10.
