AN ANCIENT African King has been named the ‘richest person to ever live’ with an estimated worth of $400 billion.

Mansa Musa I of Mali, who ruled West Africa’s Malian Empire in the early 1300s, topped the list compiled by website Celebrity Net Worth which was adjusted to reflect inflation.

The chart ranks the world’s 24 richest people of all time.

Musa made his fortune by trading salt and gold production from his empire that included Timbuktu, Ghana and Mali.

The 14th Century king and reported devout Muslim also built many mosques which still stand today.

Second on the list is the Rothschild family whose banking dynasty in the late 18th Century accumulated a total wealth of $350 billion.
