ELEPHANT SET TO RAMPAGE: Ivorian Didier Drogba
AFRICAN FOOTBALL’S two-yearly football jamboree kicks off today when co-hosts Equatorial Guinea take on Libya
The 28th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations - Gabon are the other co-hosts - gets underway and British Eurosport will broadcast all 32 matches live with high definition coverage on Eurosport HD.
Ivory Coast are the strong favourites for the title, boasting a star-studded team consisting of players present in Europe’s elite clubs. Among them include their all-time top scorer and Chelsea forward Didier Drogba. Joining him up front will be club team-mate Salomon Kalou, as well as Arsenal forward Gervinho. In the heart of the midfield will be Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, while brother Kolo sits further back in central defence.
However, the Elephants have only won the tournament once despite their obvious array of talent so this may give hope to some of the less favoured nations.
Ghana are likely to be one of the other stand-out performers, as they also possess players such as Al Ain forward Asamoah Gyan (on-loan from Sunderland) and Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari. Ghana have not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 1982, and will be hoping to end the 30-year drought.
Senegal have the strong in-form Demba Ba of Newcastle in their attack, while Mali’s stand-out figure is Barcelona’s Seydou Keita in midfield. For Mali though the retirement of Fredi Kanoute will mean the goal-scoring burden will fall on Bordeaux’s Cheick Diabate.
Eurosport will have on-site crews to deliver exclusive interviews and insights with Matt Spirrow on the ground providing content for the broadcaster’s website. The commentary team includes Leroy Rosenior, Tim Caple, Jon Roder, Dan O’Hagan and Wayne Boyce.
In addition to the live coverage, Eurosport will also broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations Special a daily 15-minute programme including reviews and previews of matches.
There will also be live minute-by-minute text commentary on every game on the Eurosport-Yahoo! website and Eurosport mobile app.
