12 years for Brixton shooter

GUNMAN: Leslie Ammah has received 12 years in jail for his crime

A MAN has been handed a 12-year prison term for shooting another man in the stomach during a fight outside a Brixton night club.

Leslie Ammah, 23, was sentenced yesterday (April 2) after he was found guilty on February 28 at the Old Bailey of grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

His 19-year-old victim, Ashley Toppin-Hector, survived the attack, which took place on September 2, 2011 outside South Beach Bar on Brixton Hill, south London.

Ammah got into an argument and fight with his victim after he was judged to be harassing female friends of the victim, who attempted to get his friends away from the eventual gunman.

Ammah became incensed and produced the handgun before shooting the man in the stomach. He then fled the scene with friends and drove off in an Audi TT.

The court heard the assailant accused his victim of "c**k-blocking" his attempt to get to know the women before firing the shot, which luckily for the victim misfired and the bullet did not deeply penetrate.

Toppin-Hector was taken to Kings College Hospital and recovered from his injuries.

Ammah, who worked at William Hill as a cashier, was identified by his gold tooth and blue-stripped top - he was arrested on January 24, 2012.

Trident investigating officer Paul Davis said: “I am pleased with the sentence that has been handed down today.

“The MPS (Met) takes offences of this nature very seriously and will take action to send a clear message to those concerned in gun crime that if they are involved, in any way, they can expect to be identified and convicted for the offence.

“I hope today’s sentencing will offer some form of closure for the victim who had enjoyed a night out and intervened in a situation simply because he was concerned for the safety of his friends”, he added.

Judge Christopher Moss QC said: “It is people like you who make those streets so dangerous for law-abiding young people, often late at night.”
