‘Tiger Woods must show greater aggression to win a major’

MAJOR WAIT: Tiger Woods (PA)

GOLFING GREAT Colin Montgomerie has said Tiger Woods should add more aggression to his game if he wants to win another major title.

The former European number one claimed Woods “has not been aggressive enough” and had “played safe golf” during his winless streak in the majors.

Woods last won a major in 2008 when he secured the US Open, and he remains only four short of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record of 18 major titles.

Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Montgomerie said: “I thought last year was important for Tiger Woods to win a major and he's running out of time, there's no doubt, to beat Jack Nicklaus' record in majors.

“The trouble with Tiger is that he just has not been aggressive enough over the weekends. He has played safe golf - he hasn't attacked. The safe game now has gone. This is a very aggressive game we play now.

“When he first came on the scene he was 30, 40 yards past everyone, now he's sometimes 30 yards behind. That's a big difference and therefore he cannot win majors playing safe any more.”

Woods will be hoping to build on a relatively successful 2013, in which he won several tournaments despite enjoying no glory in the majors.
